More information on CORDEX MIP

CORDEX is connected with CMIP6 through its designation as a Diagnostic MIP in CMIP6. (See Gutowski et al., 2016:  WCRP Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX): A Diagnostic MIP for CMIP6.  Geoscientific Model Development. (online) [DOI: 10.5194/ gmd-9-4087-2016].

Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) builds on a foundation of previous downscaling intercomparison projects and aims to advance and coordinate the science and application of regional climate downscaling through global partnerships.

The main four CORDEX goals include

i) understanding relevant regional/local climate phenomena,

ii) improving regional climate downscaling models and techniques,

iii) producing coordinated sets of regional high-resolution downscaled projections worldwide and

iv) fostering communication and knowledge exchange with users of regional climate information.

While CORDEX goals include interaction with users of regional climate information, CORDEX is not a climate service per se. However, the CORDEX community has been actively involved in establishing national and regional climate services over the last 10 years including co-production of regional climate information through dialogue with regional impact communities, stakeholders and authorities. Currently, CORDEX is a key scientific pillar in a new WCRP core project – Regional Information for Society (RIfS). The main CORDEX protocol includes a set of 14 continental-scale domains covering essentially all land areas of the globe. An integral part of CORDEX is the Flagship Pilot Studies (FPS). FPS are intended to be targeted studies aimed at addressing specific scientific challenges (e.g. convection-permitting scales, regional land use changes, regional effects of aerosol, etc.) over the standard CORDEX domains or over selected sub-domains. CORDEX is a diagnostic MIP not contributing by any experiment to CMIP7 but requesting specific CMIP7 output for regional climate downscaling.
