  • Cape Town, South Africa, 30 June-11 July 2014

    The Climate System Analysis Group (CSAG) based at the University of Cape Town will be running its annual course, 'Winter School : Using climate information for adaptation and policy development',  from 30 June-11 July 2014. 

    This 2-week intensive course has been developed specifically for participants from developing country and aims to take participants through the full spectrum of climate and climate change related topics. These include understanding:

    • Climate dynamics
    • Risk and vulnerability framing
    • Climate modeling
    • Climate change scenarios
    • Accessing and understanding climate information
    • Climate adaptation frameworks
    • Downscaling methods
    • Adaptation planning, policy and decision making

    This course is of benefit for professionals who are dealing with decision and policy development incorporating climate and climate change issues within many sectors including Government Departments and Ministries, City Councils and Local Municipalities, NGO’s, corporate organizations and environmental consultancies.

    Online application is now open on our website – <http://www.csag.uct.ac.za/winterschool> and early application is encouraged as places are limited.  The first round of applications will close on the 25th April 2014.  These applications will then be reviewed and successful candidates will be notified by the 9th May 2014.  The final deadline for applications will be 31st May 2014. All remaining applications will then be reviewed and successful candidates will be notified by the 6th June 2014.

    The full course fee (excluding accommodation) is US$2600. A limited number of sponsorships are available for applicants especially from African countries.

  • The European Network for Earth System modelling (ENES) is pleased to announce the release of the operational version of the climate4impact.eu climate model data portal tailored for the European climate change impacts community.

    The portal has been developed by the European Commission project “Infrastructure for the European Network for Earth System Modelling” (http://is.enes.org). The main portal objectives are to provide easier access to data and supporting documentation from the internationally coordinated global and regional climate modelling experiments which underpin the recent climate change assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Features include an improved intuitive search, fast visualization and download services (as defined by the EU INSPIRE directives).The portal also includes demonstrations of online downscaling facilities, on-demand data processing and climate indices calculations. The portal will be updated regularly in the upcoming months to extend its functionalities and enhance especially the documentation and support, the downscaling and on-demand data processing/indices services.

  • Rossby simulations graphic smallOn the 1st April 2014 the Rossby Centre completed the publication of the first phase of their CORDEX ensemble, a culmination of the last few years of hard work by the team. Covering 7 CORDEX domains (Africa, Europe, South Asia, North America, MENA, South America and the Arctic) this CORDEX ensemble, produced by one regional model, is the largest in the world and freely available from the Swedish ESGF data node (http://esg-dn1.nsc.liu.se). CORDEX activities continue apace at the Rossby Centre and the present ensemble will be further extended with new CORDEX simulations in the future.
